All of VGT’s bike & barge tours are carefully designed to emphasize the cultures, traditions and natural beauty which make a particular region unique. Each day's itinerary includes spectacular scenery, a history lesson or two, and plenty of opportunities to soak up the local color. The scents and sights and leisurely pace of the countryside are best appreciated by bicycle! Whether it's an easy tour on flat terrain, along well-paved bike paths and charming canals of Holland and Belgium or on our river tours where the cycling itinerary follows the river valleys so the tour rating is easy with no difficult hills you can expect to be amazed. What to Expect on a Van Gogh Bike & Barge Tour The barge - your "floating" hotel - is a snug little vessel, which can accommodate up to 28 travelers in its cabins. The boat motors quietly each day via a scenic route and if ever you do not fancy cycling, you are welcome to spend the day on board. Late each afternoon the bikers rendezvous with the boat at the next landing place for dinner and overnight stop.
All the routes on our bike & barge tours are designed to contain terrain suited for everyone from the timid, but moderately fit, beginner to the experienced, very fit intermediate cyclist or walker. Our cycling speed is leisurely, allowing time to truly "experience" the country we're visiting. Our daily cycling itineraries are planned to lead you over "postcard pretty" roads and uncluttered bike paths often known only to locals. Many of the routes are "No cars allowed" private bike lanes that make cycling a pure pleasure and a way to escape the pressures of daily life! Our bike barge routes takes you through bustling cities, historic regions, charming villages and famous towns. A well-maintained 21-speed hybrid bike with hand brakes is included in the tour price. With detailed route descriptions and maps, you are always free to bike at your own pace or join the guide who provides all the necessary information. On board you will meet an international group whose members have at least one thing in common: the pleasure they share from cycling. The Accommodations on board the barge ususually include 2 and 3 berth cabins containing bunk beds or twin beds and a wash basin. Almost all cabins have a private shower and toilet. The barges have cozy dining room areas and sun decks. Barge tours offer excellent food including a nightly 3-course dinners, ample buffet breakfasts, pack-along lunches and daily towel replacement.
Note: there is no support van on the bike and barge tours and on self guided tours!
